What's that smell?

Recently I realized that testing on animals was still a thing, I’m not really sure why I didn’t think it was. But for some reason I thought that it was a hot item a few years ago and then PETA came and sorted that out. I assumed that companies figured out that most of America is NOT cool with torturing our furry little friends. I was devastated to find out how wrong I was, and to check my house and realize almost every single product in it had been tested on animals. I went 100% cruelty free in about a millisecond and vowed to no longer support those companies in any form.

But that has posed its own issue, as some things are clearly marked “cruelty free”, some are not, and some claim to be cruelty free, but what they really mean is that particular company does not test on animals; however they buy ingredients from other companies that they know test on animals or they pay another company to test on animals for them. In addition, some companies, such as Burt’s Bees, do not test on animals and are considered “cruelty free”, but Burt’s Bees is owned by Johnson and Johnson; who DOES test on animals. Buying Burt’s Bees creates profit for Johnson and Johnson which supports animal testing. China requires that products be tested on animals, so any company that sells in China, tests on animals. None of these options are okay in my opinion, I have begun the journey of testing out products I've never used before that align with my moral code.

I have always been religious with my deodorant use, always concerned that it might not work so I usually carried extra with me, in my car or my purse. I finally found a traditional deodorant that worked well for me, as I naturally run very warm and tend to sweat a lot. To say I was nervous to give up what has proven to work is an understatement. But the thought of furry little faces spurred me on, and I decided to give EO Organic Deodorant and Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Cream a try.

I ordered both online, and received the EO spray first in citrus scent. It smells like an essential oil I used once for a massage, strong but not overpowering with a hint of citrus. I had second doubts right away, I’ve always thought wearing essential oils as a deodorant was a bit weird, a little too “hippy” for me. But here I was, about to spray my pits with it. I got out of the shower, dried off and used two sprays for each arm. Unfortunately I had just shaved my arm pits, and spraying that directly afterwards did give quite a burning sensation. So I was relatively displeased about that, but went on my way. I went out for the day and was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t notice any odor at all, I reapplied it once or twice throughout the day, not because I noticed any smell or sweat. I suppose I was just being paranoid and wanted to make sure I wasn’t offending anyone.

Feeling quite pleased with the results my husband decided to give it a try too. We were both relatively happy with it through an easy day, but did notice after going to the gym we were quite pungent (though even with traditional deodorant sometimes after the gym I didn’t smell so sweet!). Eric has been using the EO spray every day for a week now, and we are both happy with the results. I was expecting the worst, but actually like the EO spray quite a bit.

I used the EO spray for three days and then I got the Meow Meow Tweet in the mail and very hesitantly decided to try it. I’m not sure why products that are good for you or natural, have to be so stinking weird. Meow Meow Tweet is a cream, in a small little tub that you have to dip your finger in and then smear on your armpits. I don’t hate armpits per say, but I don’t really like them either and rubbing my fingers in them isn’t exactly my favorite idea. But again, furry faces spurred me forward, and I smeared the chalk-like paste in to my pits. This particular product is baking soda free and grapefruit scented, it has an extremely pleasant smell and once applied (no burning after shaving!) it felt dry immediately and I had no residue on my clothing.

It kept me dry and fresh all day long, and the first day I used it was walking quite a few dogs and got pretty warm. But even when I came home that afternoon I still felt clean and dry. After a couple of days, it no longer seemed weird to dip my fingers in to a jar and smear them in my armpits; it has become my new normal. If I was worried that my day might be too vigorous or long, I would probably use the Meow Meow Tweet in the morning and the keep the EO spray in my purse so I could freshen up later.

Overall, I’m extremely pleased with both products and would recommend either. My husband has been using the EO spray exclusively and I have been using the Meow Meow Tweet with an occasional spritz of the EO spray. I am happy with my purchases, and am so relieved that I found an excellent replacement that protects the creatures we have been entrusted to care for.

And yes, my husband and I voluntarily smelt each other’s arm pits while testing these two products :)
